PROPOSAL BY
NIGERIAN NURSES ASSOCIATION, USA
The Nigerian Nurses Association of USA [NNAUSA] is an Association of professional nurses of Nigerian descent in the United States. It is incorporated in the State of New York and is based in New York City. The Association is an IRS registered 501(c) (3) tax-exempt non-profit organization.
Its primary mission is to improve the health of the Nigerians and their communities by: (a) promoting proper health conduct, increasing health literacy and providing free health screening to the Nigerian and other communities in the United States; and (b) encouraging and assisting members to attain the highest professional standard and seek greatest height through education and mentoring.
ACTIVITIES
In its efforts to fulfill its mission and objectives, the Association engages in a number of activities. These include organizing health fairs where participants are screened for the purposes of early detection of medical issues before they become major medical problems, health literacy campaigns to assist participants in understanding essential and sound health practices, and so on. Areas covered in the course of these activities are comprehensive and include family planning, HIV-Aids education, malaria prevention, nutrition, pre-natal and post-natal issues, and general medical issues.
Many of the activities had been effected under the auspices of a number of hospitals [New York Hospital Queens, Queens Hospital Center, St Mary Immaculate Hospital, Brooklyn Hospital Center], organizations, such at the Eko Club, Bini Club, Mbaise Association, Imo Association, Christ Apostolic Church First in America, and Nigerian-American Muslim Integrated Community. The Health Fairs were carried out at the Nigerian-Consulate General and at several activities organized by organizations within the Nigerian community
such as at the annual Nigerian Independence Day Parade/Health Fair. The Association conducted free mammogram services for Nigerian women 40 and above in conjunction with the American Cancer Society.
MEDICAL MISSIONS
Medical missions offer the Association the opportunity of proverbially killing two birds with one stone; the opportunity to engage in its primary mission of promoting proper health conduct, increasing health literacy and providing free health screening to the Nigerian and other communities; and the opportunity to give back to Nigerian communities back home in Nigeria. As such members of the Association view these missions as of extreme importance.
In the past, the Association had sponsored a number of medical missions. They were carried out in Imo, Lagos, Edo States and the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja. These involved not only screening for medical issues but outright donations of medications, condoms and other essential medical equipment. Also, members of the Association participated at the First Nigerians In the Diaspora Conference and Second Scientific Program in Abuja where it presented a paper on the “Role of Nurses in Prevention and Management of Sickle Cell Disease.” A partnership with the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives resulted in a school outreach program on the prevention of HIV/AIDS during the mission.
For this proposal, it is hoped that the Association would be able to put five groups of five members each as participants. They will travel to Nigeria with donated medical equipments, supplies and medication that will be used, in partnership with the local State medical apparatus and personnel for the conduct of screening, literary and other such activities in very disadvantaged areas of the selected states. [See Appendix]. Each group will visit two states and spend a week in each. All remaining equipment and supplies utilized during the mission would be left with the state agencies for further utilization
SPONSORSHIPS
While most of the Association’s activities have been carried out through the volunteering efforts and with funds contributed by its members, the Association has been a privileged beneficiary of support [financial and moral] of several individuals and companies such as the Western Union, Moneygram, United Bank for Africa, and Eko Club.
PARTICIPATING ORGANIZATIONS
Conducting a medical mission to Nigeria requires the collaboration of a lot of organizations. The Association is relying on the promised supply of medical equipment, supplies, and medications from several non-profit organizations that specialize in providing such needed items and supplies. In the past, the Association had enjoyed assistance from the following:
Save African Concerts [SACAIDS]
MEMBERSHIPS
NNAUSA and its members are privileged to be members of several professional and civic organizations such as American Nurses Association, NY State Nurses Association, Organization for the Advancement of Nigerians. It was recently accorded admission as a partner to the United Nations Global Compact Initiative; a membership that compels support of the Initiative’s 10 principles and activities aimed at accomplishing the UN Millennium Development Goals especially in the areas of the general healthcare of national populations, eradication of poverty, malaria, HIV-Aids etc.
